Dr. Alex Hills
Chief Scientist

Alex Hills is Distinguished Service Professor of Engineering and Public Policy and Computer Science at Carnegie-Mellon University, where he teaches wireless communications and does research concerning wireless communications technology. He is the creator of Rollabout, which was developed as a way to help others build large-scale wireless LANs like the Wireless Andrew network at Carnegie-Mellon.

Dr. Hills conceived and founded Carnegie-Mellon’s Wireless Andrew project in 1993 and led the project until 1999. Wireless Andrew is a campus-wide, high-speed wireless network that is available to all students, faculty and staff of the university. It was the first network of its kind in the world and has served as a model for many other universities and businesses. Under his leadership, the Wireless Andrew team resolved many issues, including creating a system design able to provide adequate coverage and capacity.

Dr. Hills is an internationally recognized expert in a variety of wireless technologies, including wireless LAN, cellular and PCS (including 3G), and fixed wireless technologies like MMDS and LMDS. He is an active wireless researcher and a frequent speaker at conferences, conventions, and corporate training sessions. He has also been a guest lecturer at many universities. He is currently involved in the development of next-generation wireless technologies, including those which provide both voice and data.

He holds a Bachelors degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a Masters degree in electrical engineering from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in engineering and public policy from Carnegie-Mellon University.
