University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Chooses Wireless Recon Technology From Helium Networks

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Helium Networks is pleased to
announce that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), recognized
as the 'most wired' organization in the health field according to the annual
survey by InformationWeek has selected the Wireless Recon(TM) site survey
audit and design system. UPMC is utilizing Wireless Recon technology in the
deployment and management of a wireless network that supports its new pharmacy
application for bedside medication administration.

UPMC is a 4,000-bed healthcare system serving western Pennsylvania and
comprises 19 tertiary care, community, and specialty hospitals, numerous
outpatient and research facilities physicians' offices and growing number of
cancer centers. The purchase and use of the beside pharmacy application
signified that UPMC's WLAN became mission-critical, so the healthcare system
required a solution that would manage the dynamic communication between access
points. They also needed a solution that would scale to support more than 500
access points that are currently in the network.

While the use of wireless technology increases patient care at UPMC, the
healthcare system wanted to reduce the security risks of opening itself up to
a wireless network, while also providing the best possible coverage to support
its remote users. A cross-disciplined team recognized the need for 24x7
network reliability and turned to Helium Network's Wireless Recon site survey
and design technology for detailed network coverage mapping, wireless policy
enforcement, rogue access point detection and performance troubleshooting and
interference detection.

Helium Networks' patented, breakthrough Wireless Recon system enables
UPMC's network engineers and technicians to optimally conduct site surveys or
audit 802.11 a/b/g wireless networks in half the time of traditional site
survey and design methods, while automatically collecting the industry's
largest set of real wireless measurements with precise location fingerprint.
Wireless Recon is comprised of SiteScout(TM) hardware and SiteSense(TM)
software, which provides real wireless measurements with precise position
location information. It then leverages this rich data set to understand and
analyze the RF behavior inside a facility with the highest degree of accuracy
and precision.

According to Bob Hedglen, Manager of Technical Services for UPMC, "We like
the Wireless Recon product because it provides an automated process for site
surveys and monitoring. SiteScout hardware enables us to conduct hands-free
surveys - we no longer have to physically carry our laptops to conduct site
surveys. Wireless Recon also takes samples every couple of seconds, providing
a much more consistent data set, which is important to our getting the best
range possible for our network."
