National Institutes of Health Selects Helium Networks for Campus-Wide Wireless Network
PITTSBURGH, JULY 20, 2006 - Helium
Networks, Inc.
(http://www.heliumnetworks.com), a leading provider of wireless LAN (WLAN) site survey, design and maintenance tools, announces that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has selected its Wireless Recon™ solution to design and maintain the WLAN at its Bethesda, Maryland campus.
The NIH campus network spans over 60 buildings, many of which are considered challenging environments for radio frequency (RF) communication due to a combination of building materials used over the years and numerous design modifications made along the way.
“Our Wireless Recon solution is designed to meet the challenges that the NIH and many others face with wireless networks,” said Walt Halasowski, President and CEO of Helium Networks, Inc. “We provide an easy-to-use, highly accurate solution that delivers a level of clarity and reliability that is unmatched in the industry for designing a wireless network in support of high quality of service (QoS) applications.”
Halasowski notes that Wireless Recon optimally designs the network with its ability to see, in detail, how RF signals propagate, in consideration of the complete environment – using all real wireless, data captured in an easy and efficient manner. Other site survey and analysis tools rely heavily on estimation and prediction and require a great deal of effort just to simulate the effects that a building has on RF. By contrast, Wireless Recon provides complete coverage – connection quality and performance while roaming, which is a must for mission-critical applications that need to support voice-over-IP (VoIP) over WLAN (VoWLAN) and other demand applications.
“For NIH’s environment, the need to understand the details of what really happens with the signals (cell coverage area, co-channel and adjacent channel interference, reflection and multi-path) is crucial,” explains Halasowski, “especially when working with an application that requires high QoS with fast hand-off time between AP cells.”
About the National Institutes of Health The National Institute of Health (NIH) – the Nation’s Medical Research Agency – includes 27 Institutes and Centers and is an Operating Division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting basic, clinical, and translational medical research, and it investigates the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases.
